The Water Witch
We hired local water dowser Jack Sweeney to come out and look for the best place to drill our well. We did this May 31, 2002. Jack said the water was 250' down, and would rise to 175' once we broke through. He also said that there was a LOT of water and it would flow 40 gpm. Once we drill the well, we'll be able to confirm or deny this...
The drillers hit water first at about 240' (hard to tell exactly when you're drilling with mud) and bottom is 300'. The static water level is 150', but flow was only about 11 gpm. So, overall, pretty good guessing.

How he did this:

First he walked the property with a copper pipe looking for a good spot.

Then he focused further with a typical "Y" shaped branch.

Last, he determined the depth by using a swinging plumb bob.
